West With A Detour

We left Sault Saint Marie on a beautiful sunny morning and headed toward Rt M28.  A man we chatted with in the parking lot while loading up said we should take a side trip to the Whitefish Point Lighthouse and Shipwreck Museum.  It was way out there but it was worth the trip.  When we arrived the air temperature was 56 and it was very foggy.  There were a number of monument to the Edmund Fitzgerald and the fog and the wind and the fact that 2 of the crew were from Ashtabula made it seem all that more solemn. Those men were Karl Peckol and Paul Riippa.  I knew Karl through some other friends...

Right on the shores of the great lake they call Gitche Gumee

The lighthouse and the surrounding buildings are very old but very well maintained.

Note to self (and others): One trip across the U.P. on M28 is enough!   There were some very beautiful spots but for the most part it was all woodland and very straight road.  There were lots of moose crossing signs but we did not see any.  Bummer.

Zzzzzzzz......

Ok...this was nice

I guess you go a little bonkers in the UP.  Lew and Karen Downs need one of these in Hambden!

We made a lunch stop in Munising, MI.  We ate at the Dogpatch Restaurant which is a Lil Abner themed joint....if you can believe it!   It was actually a nice place and our waitress was very silly and very nice.

Where's Snuffy Smiff??

Sorry this is sideways!

The decorating was Bugs Bunny approved I think.

The drive from Munising to Ashland, WI seemed to take forever because there wasn't much to look at.  We did pick up an hour when we crossed into the Central Time Zone.

Not sure what this is but it was close to the MI WI state line.  I think it means GO BUCKS!!

Clever..maybe Conneaut needs a new catch phrase.

We checked into our hotel, The Best Western Hotel Chequamegon. It is an old hotel that has been restored by Best Western.  It sits right on the shore of Lake Superior.  I would recommend it for the view!

I didn't know until this morning there might be ghosts!!

We walked about 5 blocks to the Deep Water Restaurant/South Shore Brewery for dinner.  It was located in another old building in this lovely little town.  Everything there was great.

I had this beer in honor of our friend Alan Block, transplanted farmer and Badger that he is

We walked back to the hotel and wrapped up the night on the terrace overlooking the Lake, had a drink, and watched the sunset.

Not bad, huh?

In the morning we will be Bemidji, MN bound!!
